Episode destination: Tokyo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With more than 14 million residents in the city and nearly 40 million in the metropolitan region, it is one of the largest urban areas in the world. Willem and Rick explain that the city used to be called Edo and did not become the capital of Japan until the 19th century. They also discuss the time difference with the Netherlands and how Tokyo is known for its special combination of ancient traditions and ultramodern technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo neighborhoods & traditional culture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

They take listeners through different neighborhoods of the city. For example, they discuss Ginza, where you will find luxury stores and large department stores, and Akihabara, the center of technology, games and Japanese pop culture such as anime and manga. According to Willem and Rick, this neighborhood almost feels like another world with huge electronics stores, arcades and themed cafes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional side of Tokyo is also featured. Asakusa is home to the famous Senso-ji temple, one of the city's oldest and most visited temples. The route to the temple is through a busy street full of souvenir stores and traditional snacks, which they say is a perfect place to experience Japanese culture and street food!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Modern Highlights of the City<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo is home to several modern highlights such as the Tokyo Skytree, which offers impressive views of the city, and TeamLab Planets, an interactive art experience where visitors walk through rooms of light, water and digital projections. Also passing by is the Toyosu Fish Market, where the famous tuna auction takes place every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In western Tokyo are the popular districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku. Shibuya is known for the famous Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world, and the statue of the loyal dog Hachiko. Harajuku, on the other hand, is famous for its colorful fashion and street culture, while Shinjuku is known for its skyscrapers, restaurants and lively nightlife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tokyo Disney Resort<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For amusement park enthusiasts, William and Rick also discuss Tokyo Disney Resort<\/a>. The resort consists of Tokyo Disneyland<\/a> and Tokyo DisneySea<\/a>, with DisneySea in particular being among the best theme parks in the world, according to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
