Iris takes you along on her visit to the Kennedy Space Center

After booking the Kennedy Space Center for clients for years, it was finally my turn to Kennedy Space Center to visit during my Vacation in Orlando! After our cruise with Disney Fantasy, we arrive in Port Canaveral, the cruise port located near the Kennedy Space Center. From the cruise ship, we even saw a rocket launch, which really got us in the space exploration spirit!

What is the Kennedy Space Center?

After my visit, I can already say that this is much more than just a museum—it has countless interactive exhibits that will keep you entertained and amazed all day long! The Kennedy Space Center is the United States’ main launch site and is operated by NASA.

At the Kennedy Space Center, you’ll find reminders everywhere of the major historic missions launched from here, such as the Apollo missions to the moon! The complex is still actively used for space missions, and you can see for yourself just how active it really is! It’s also worth noting that it’s a nature reserve, so you can even spot American wildlife all around the Kennedy Space Center.

Highlights of my visit:

Space Shuttle Atlantis

A real space shuttle that flew no fewer than 33 missions! Space Shuttle Atlantis is on display in an impressive way, suspended in the air with its cargo bay fully open. It’s truly something special to see where astronauts live for months on end. There are also interactive presentations and exhibits here to showcase various missions and experiences to visitors. This is definitely something that will stay with me for a long time.

Rocket Garden

At Rocket Garden, we took a walk among several massive historic rockets. We got to see many of them up close and even look inside the capsules. Here you can see where the astronauts lived day and night! You can also take a free 30-minute guided tour here, where you’ll learn all about the massive rockets you walk past!

Heroes & Legends

Here, we saw everything about the space heroes and the development of the U.S. space program. From real, personal stories told by astronauts to historical artifacts like the spacesuits. We also saw the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame here, featuring famous names like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, along with stories about their journey to the moon and their medals.

Gateway: The Deep Space Launch Complex

Here, it becomes clear how space exploration and the future go hand in hand. NASA’s focus in the near future is: Mars! We took part in several interactive activities in this area, as well as the spectacular motion simulator ‘Spaceport KSC,’ where you embark on a futuristic journey through various worlds and galaxies! 

The bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center

This bus tour of the rest of the Kennedy Space Center is included with your admission ticket and is more than just a ride from point A to point B. Once we were seated on the bus, the driver gave us detailed explanations of everything we passed. Since it’s an active ‘base,’ we even saw unique spacecraft components being transported! Basically, you’re just passing through an active workshop at the Kennedy Space Center. And that brings you right up close to one of my absolute highlights:

Apollo/Saturn V Center

After the bus tour, we arrived at this ‘theme area.’ Here, everything revolves around the Apollo missions, and you quickly realize just how impressive these missions truly were. First, we saw a spectacular presentation about the moon landing. In this show, you learn how the people ‘behind the scenes’ in the control room experienced this historic moment! We also saw the massive Saturn V rocket here; it’s one of the most powerful rockets ever built. 

We also saw historical artifacts here and even got to touch a real moon rock! All around the artifacts, you’ll also come across interesting historical stories about the Apollo program. Here, you can also relax while enjoying typical American cuisine at the ‘Moon Rock Café’ or take another stroll through the gift shop to pick up a souvenir to take home. I bought a cute keychain as a souvenir!

Interactive experiences

Throughout the Kennedy Space Center, you’ll find a variety of interactive experiences, including simulators like ‘Spaceport KSC’ and the ‘Shuttle Launch Experience.’ This attraction lets you experience what a space shuttle launch actually feels like for astronauts, complete with G-forces, vibrations, and more! At KSC, you can also enjoy VR (Virtual Reality) experiences about space flights, astronaut missions, and more. 

There’s also a highly interactive play area for kids called ‘Planet Play,’ where budding little astronauts can climb, slide, and learn about space travel through fun digital games. Also worth mentioning is the ‘Astronaut Encounter,’ where, depending on availability, you can meet a real astronaut and ask all the questions you want during a Q&A session with snacks and drinks.

Practical Tips

• Full day: Set aside a full day for your visit—there’s so much to explore, and you’ll definitely need a full day to see it all!
• Early: Come early in the day so you have time for all the activities and can be the first to explore the simulations and interactive elements
• Storage: There is a luggage storage facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, so you can easily store your luggage while visiting the KSC before or after your cruise, for example!
• Missile launches: Check in advance for any rocket launches during your visit to or around the Kennedy Space Center.
• Plan your activities: Are you planning to activities at the Kennedy Space Center Great, and see what other activities you’d like to try to make your visit complete!
• Bus tour: You should set aside the most time for the bus tour during your visit. Keep in mind that the buses don’t run all day. The last one usually departs between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m., so it’s a good idea not to schedule this activity too late in the day. These days, there are two stops along the way. Reservations aren’t necessary; you can simply join the line whenever you’re ready to board. Also, you don’t have to get back on the same bus after a stop. You can rejoin the line at any stop and continue your journey on the next available bus.

Personal experience

After a full day at the Kennedy Space Center It’s clearly much more than just a museum—it’s an impressive, interactive experience where you can learn all about space travel, astronauts, NASA, and more! It was much bigger than I expected, and for me, it’s the perfect activity for a day on the Space Coast. If you’re in or around the Space Coast, such as in Orlando, ...this is definitely worth the trip!
