    General information

Time: The United States has several time zones. The time difference from the Netherlands depends on where you are staying. In most places, time is adjusted at the same time as here in the Netherlands.

    • New York: 6 hours earlier
    • Florida (Orlando, Miami): 6 hours earlier
    • West Coast (e.g., Los Angeles and San Francisco): 9 hours earlier

Language: The official language in the United States is English and is therefore spoken there by default. Spanish is also widely spoken in major & southern cities.

Voltage: 110 volts, 60 Hz. It is necessary to bring a world plug, that way you can be sure you can charge your devices anywhere.

Currency: The official currency in the United States is the United States Dollar (USD). One Euro is approximately 1.15 Dollars. One Dollar is about 0.87 Euro (March, 2026). One Dollar consists of 100 cents. The exchange rate varies, therefore it is always wise to check it before departure.

    Communications

Telephoning in the United States: The mobile network is generally excellent. Keep in mind that providers may charge high roaming fees when using a European SIM card. For many data and calling uses, it may be more economical to purchase a local SIM card or an e-SIM through Airalo, for example.

Internet in the United States: Almost all hotels, restaurants and public buildings offer free wifi. Many Wi-Fi hotspots are available in large cities.

    Food and Drink

Tap water is safe to drink in most parts of the United States, but bottled water is available everywhere. American cuisine is varied, with influences from all over the world. In major cities, you will find a wide range of international cuisines, ranging from Asian and Italian to Mexican and Middle Eastern. In addition, fast food restaurants and food courts in shopping malls are everywhere.

    Money matters/Trophies

International credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) are accepted almost everywhere. Debit cards as we often use them in the Netherlands do not work in all locations. It is recommended that you always bring a credit card.

Automatic teller machines (ATMs) are widely available, but transaction fees may be charged for foreign bank cards. When making payments with a European bank card, it is more economical to opt for settlement in dollars rather than euros.

Tips are common in the United States and often an important part of the income of service personnel. The guidelines are:

    • Restaurants: 15-20% of the bill (unless service charges are included)
    • Cabs: 10-15%
    • Hotel staff (luggage carriers, chambermaids): $1-5 per shift

    Sales Tax

In the United States, consumer prices are shown exclusive of sales tax. This means that VAT is still added to the prices shown. This applies to both goods and services.

    Border documents and health

Visa: Dutch and Belgian nationals can travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), provided they apply for ESTA travel authorization in advance. ESTA must be applied for online at least 72 hours before departure and is valid for up to two years. You can easily apply for it through the official website of the American government.

Legitimation: A valid Dutch or Belgian passport is required. This passport must still be valid for at least six months upon departure from the US.

Health: Get proper travel insurance, as medical care in the United States is very expensive. Vaccinations are generally not required, but it is recommended to check the latest guidelines.

    Climate

The United States has different climate zones, temperatures and humidity depends on which place you are going to visit.

    • East Coast (New York, Washington D.C.): Temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters.
    • Southern states (Florida, Texas): Warm summers, mild winters and in some areas a tropical climate.
    • West Coast (California): Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
    • Northern states and Midwest: Severe winters with lots of snow, especially around the Great Lakes.
    • Desert regions (Arizona, Nevada): Very hot summers and cool winters. The best travel time depends on the region you are visiting.

    Transportation

Cars are widely used in the United States. Most tourists and locals get around by rental car, this is especially important outside the major cities. There is an extensive road network and the roads are well maintained. However, it is possible that traffic regulations vary from state to state, always keep a close eye on this.

    Cab and public transportation:

    • In cities like New York, Orlando and San Francisco, cabs and Uber/Lyft are popular modes of transportation. This is easily arranged through the Uber or Lyft app.
    • Public transportation is well established in cities such as New York and Washington D.C. with subway and bus networks. In smaller cities and outside urban areas, public transportation is more limited.
