A trip to Tokyo is an experience full of contrasts. In this metropolis, modern and authentic neighborhoods blend seamlessly. You stroll across busy intersections like Shibuya Crossing, visit temples and gardens where tranquility reigns, and enjoy views from the Tokyo Skytree.
What makes a vacation to Tokyo so special is its versatility. You'll explore the bustling Japanese neighborhoods, taste Japanese cuisine in countless restaurants or street food spots and have the chance to visit unique theme parks such as Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disneysea. With a good subway and fine train connections, you can easily explore the city and make Tokyo the perfect starting point for a tour of Japan.
Often a visit to Tokyo is combined with Osaka, the city known for its street food, bustling neighborhoods such as Dotonbori and Universal Studios Japan. So in one trip you will experience both the modern metropolis of Tokyo and the welcoming energy of Osaka.
A vacation to Tokyo is not complete without a visit to its most famous attractions.
The world's most famous intersection is located in the heart of Tokyo. Here thousands of people cross at once every day, surrounded by huge screens and illuminated advertisements. It is a place that perfectly captures the energy of the city: busy but structured. From cafes nearby or the viewpoint at Shibuya Sky you can see this extraordinary scene from above, especially impressive at night because of all the lights. Close to this intersection you will also find the famous statue from the movie Hachiko.
At 634 meters, the Tokyo Skytree is Japan's tallest building and one of Tokyo's most popular landmarks. From the top, you look out over the entire city and, on a clear day, even as far as Mount Fuji. Below the tower you will find shopping malls and an aquarium, so you can take some time out for this.
The Meiji Shrine is located in the middle of the Shibuya district and is surrounded by a vast forest area. The contrast with the hustle and bustle of the city makes this a special place to visit. At the entrance you pass impressive and photogenic wooden torii gates, and in the main hall you can see visitors writing down wishes or leaving prayers. Visit this place if you want to unwind in this busy city.
The Imperial Palace is the official residence of the Japanese emperor and one of Tokyo's historic sites. Although the buildings themselves are not accessible, you can visit the gardens and parks surrounding the palace for free. The Eastern Gardens are especially popular, with their ponds, stone walls and quiet walkways.

Besides the famous sights, Tokyo has endless activities to offer. One of the most enjoyable ways to experience the city is by exploring the different neighborhoods. Using public transportation, you can easily travel between the neighborhoods.
Begin your exploration in Harajuku, the district known for its colorful and eye-catching fashion. At its heart is Takeshita-dori, a narrow street full of trendy stores, cafes and street food. Here you will taste unusual snacks such as rainbow cotton candy bars, crepes with whipped cream and the popular animal pancakes in themed cafes.
Then you can move on to Shinjuku, a district full of skyscrapers, bright billboards, restaurants and nightlife. Or opt for Akihabara, better known as “Electric Town,” where fans of anime, manga and games will have their fill.
Shopping in Tokyo is also an experience. In Shibuya you will find a large Disney Store and in Shibuya Parco and Ikebukuro the official Nintendo Stores with merchandise of Mario, Pokémon and Zelda.
