Shanghai Disneyland

Shanghai Disneyland is a unique project born out of a collaboration between Disney and the Chinese government. The park combines the magic of Disney with elements of Chinese culture to attract both local visitors and international tourists. This collaboration is not only economically important to China, but has also led to a cultural exchange between the two countries. Taking into account Chinese rules and wishes has created a theme park that perfectly suits the local market.

Frequently asked questions about Shanghai

No, Shanghai is smaller than the Netherlands in terms of surface area. The city has an area of about 6,300 km², while the Netherlands is over 41,000 km². However, more people live there: more than 25 million compared to about 18 million in the Netherlands.

Prices vary. Eating out can be cheap at street stalls or local restaurants, but international hotels and luxury stores tend to be pricey. In general, costs are lower than in Western Europe, except for luxury imports.

Mandarin, the official language of China, is mainly spoken in this city. You hardly hear Cantonese here, which is mainly spoken in southern China. It is useful to download a translation app in advance, as many locals do not speak English.

The city has two international airports: Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). For intercontinental flights from Europe, you usually arrive at Pudong. Hongqiao is mainly used for domestic and regional flights.

A direct flight from Amsterdam takes about 11 hours. With a transfer, travel time can vary between 13 and 16 hours, depending on the route and airline.

The best travel time is in spring (April-May) and fall (September-October). Then temperatures are pleasant and the sky is often clear. Summer is hot and crowded, while winter is cold but often dry.

Yes, for a trip to China you will need a visa as a Dutch citizen. For short stays, you can sometimes take advantage of a 72- or 144-hour visa-free regime, depending on your transit.
