How to get to the Tian Tan Buddha

The Tian Tan Buddha is located on Lantau Island and is easily accessible from the city. The most common way to get there is via the Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car. This cable car leaves from Tung Chung and takes you to Ngong Ping Village, near the Big Buddha, in about 25 minutes. During the ride, you have views of the sea, mountains and Hong Kong airport, making the cable car an attraction in itself.

Those who prefer to keep both feet on the ground can also take the bus from Tung Chung towards Ngong Ping. This bus travels along a winding mountain road and offers frequent scenic views of Lantau Island along the way. The bus is an affordable alternative to the cable car, although the ride takes a little longer.

Many travelers combine the Tian Tan Buddha with other places on Lantau Island, such as Tai O Fishing Village or a nature walk. As a result, a visit fits well within a day trip.

Practical Tips

• Access - The grounds around the Tian Tan Buddha and the Po Lin Monastery are free to enter. To enter the platform near the Buddha, you pay a small entrance fee of about HK$20 (€2.50).
• Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car - The cable car is paid and is an important part of the experience for many visitors. A standard return ticket costs an average of HK$235 (€27). Glass-bottom cabins are more expensive.
• Bus as an alternative - The bus from Tung Chung is a more economical alternative to the cable car, but the ride takes longer and involves a winding mountain road.
• Best time to go - Mornings are often quieter and more likely to have clear visibility.
• Duration of the visit - Allow two to three hours for the Big Buddha, the monastery and the surrounding area.=
• Clothing - Covering clothing is appreciated when visiting the Po Lin Monastery.
• Weather and visibility - In fog, views may be limited, especially at the cable car and on top of the platform.
