One of the city's most visited sites is Fushimi Inari-taisha, an ancient Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of rice and prosperity. The Golden Pavilion is a temple whose upper floors are covered in gold leaf. The building is beautifully reflected in the pond next to it, surrounded by gardens that show a different face each season. This makes Kinkaku-ji one of the city's most photogenic spots.
High on a hill stands the Kiyomizu-dera temple, famous for its wooden terrace that rises above the trees. From here you have a sweeping view of the city. Especially in spring and fall, this is a popular spot to admire the cherry blossoms and autumn colors.
In the western part of the city is Arashiyama, known for its impressive bamboo forest. Between the tall stalks hangs a calm atmosphere. Nearby, you will also discover restful temples, manicured gardens and the Togetsu Kyo Bridge, which crosses the Katsura River.
If you love food, don't miss the Nishiki Market. Also called the kitchen of Kyoto, this indoor market is full of stalls where you can sample local specialties and buy souvenirs.
