In episode 3 of Florivida the Travel Podcast, Willem and Rick take you to Los Angeles! They open with their regular rhythm of bi-weekly episodes and share where to listen and watch the podcast: Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube. In Florivida's vacation post, they discuss listener responses and additional tips following the Hong Kong episode, including about paying with QR codes and the Michelin Guide as a handy dining guide.
Then they dive into Los Angeles! They share a series of facts: nearly 4 million residents in the city, more than 10 million in the region, an average of about 280 sunny days a year and a time difference of usually 9 hours. They also discuss the city's Spanish origins and the meaning of the name Los Angeles. They discuss flying to LAX with direct flights from Amsterdam, alternative airports such as Burbank and John Wayne Airport and why a rental car in LA is virtually essential because of the distances and limited public transportation.
Then they dive into the major attractions. The region has several well-known theme parks. Knott's Berry Farm passes as a historic park with character and strong roller coasters. Disneyland Resort in Anaheim gets attention with practical tips on hotels and the difference from Orlando, which includes many more Disney hotels. Six Flags Magic Mountain is portrayed as a paradise for roller coaster enthusiasts. Universal Studios Hollywood combines a working movie studio with a theme park, where they say the studio tour is one of the highlights. Many of the theme parks are perfect to combine during a trip to Los Angeles!
There is also plenty to see outside the parks. Hollywood Boulevard with the Walk of Fame must be seen, according to them, but sometimes feels a bit like past glory. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour is highly recommended for movie fans. For Disney fans, they discuss places associated with Walt Disney, such as his first places of residence and work, Griffith Park with Walt's Barn and Forest Lawn, where he is buried. Also passing by are Beverly Hills, Santa Monica with its pier and the official terminus of Route 66, and briefly Downtown LA.
In this regular column, Rick shares his practical insights about Los Angeles and how to get the most out of your stay.
According to him, LA is not a city you do “quickly.” Distances are great, traffic can be heavy and the city is made up of multiple areas, each with its own atmosphere. Good planning really makes the difference here.
It is stressed that LA becomes especially fun if you know what you want to see and fine-tune your expectations. It is not a compact European city, but a sprawling metropolis where you have to plan purposefully.
His conclusion: give Los Angeles time, divide your days smartly and allow for flexibility, and you will discover why this city becomes a favorite for many travelers after all.
In this regular column, Willem dives into Los Angeles food and, as always, he gets a visible appetite.
Los Angeles, he says, may not be the first city you think of when you think of culinary enjoyment, but it is a place full of quintessential West Coast classics, comfort food and iconic park snacks.
Rick notes that Willem talks about it so enthusiastically that he could almost start his own food channel.
In addition, it tips off Trader Sam's at the Disneyland Hotel: a polynesian cocktail bar where drinks are paired with show effects and where you can take souvenir cups.
Los Angeles, according to them, stands for culinary:
Their conclusion: don't expect sophisticated European food culture, but do expect lots of flavor, experience and typical American comfort food.
At the end, Willem and Rick look ahead to the next episode: Tokyo. They invite listeners to send in questions and tips so that the podcast is truly “for and by” the community.
