The Kennedy Space Center is the official visitor complex of NASA and without a doubt one of the most impressive places in Florida. From this historic location departed the famous Apollo 11 mission in 1969, with which the first human set foot on the moon. Today you can experience the magic of space travel up close and personal here.
Walk among giant rockets from the early days of space exploration, come face to face with the iconic Space Shuttle Atlantis, and discover how NASA is working on new missions to the Moon and even Mars. With interactive attractions, impressive exhibits, and real space history, a visit to the Kennedy Space Center is an experience you won’t soon forget.
The complex is located on Merritt Island near Cape Canaveral, about an hour's drive from Orlando. Perfect as a fun day trip in addition to the theme parks, but also ideal as a stopover before or after a cruise from Port Canaveral.
The Kennedy Space Center consists of several zones where you can explore both the history and the future of space travel.
Heroes & Legends is the first themed area you enter at the Kennedy Space Center, and it’s entirely dedicated to the astronauts who made history. In the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, you’ll learn all about famous names like John Glenn, Neil Armstrong, and Buzz Aldrin. Here you’ll find real astronaut suits, medals, and inspiring stories from the history of spaceflight.
You’ll also see the impressive introductory show ‘What is a Hero?’, where you’ll learn just how much courage and perseverance are required for a space mission. After the show, you’ll discover actual capsules from NASA’s early days—the vehicles that astronauts actually used to travel into space. There are also interactive exhibits where you can test for yourself what it’s like to be an astronaut.
The name ‘Rocket Garden’ pretty much says it all. In this open-air area, you’ll walk among massive historic rockets! Here you’ll find rockets from the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs; you can even look inside the capsules of some of them to see where the astronauts lived day and night. Join the free guided tours and learn everything about these massive rockets in just 30 minutes! For the connoisseurs, here are some of the highlights you’ll pass by:
And much more!
This themed area is all about the future of space exploration. Here, NASA focuses on missions to Mars, deep space, and new forms of commercial spaceflight. The absolute highlight is ‘Spaceport KSC,’ a spectacular motion simulator where you take a futuristic space flight past various worlds and galaxies.
You’ll also get an up-close look at modern space technology, such as the SpaceX Dragon capsule and the Orion capsule, which is being used for the new Artemis missions to the moon. With holograms, interactive exhibits, and futuristic technology, this area feels like you’re getting a sneak peek into the future of space travel.
For many visitors, this is the highlight of the Kennedy Space Center. In this area, everything revolves around the actual Space Shuttle Atlantis. Through an impressive pre-show featuring projections, launches, and footage from space exploration, the excitement builds slowly until you finally come face to face with the actual Atlantis—the shuttle that flew a staggering 33 missions. The shuttle hangs impressively in the air as if it were still floating through space, complete with an open cargo bay and extended robotic arm. You’ll also find many interactive exhibits here, including the popular ‘Shuttle Launch Experience,’ where you can experience for yourself what a real shuttle launch feels like.
You’ll also find the impressive ‘Forever Remembered’ here, a memorial to the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, which illustrates just how extraordinary—but also how risky—space travel can be.
The included NASA bus tour takes you to this impressive themed area, entirely dedicated to the Apollo missions. Your visit begins with the spectacular ‘Firing Room Theater’ show, where you’ll experience the historic launch of Apollo 8 through original NASA footage and audio. After the show, the doors open and you find yourself face to face with the gigantic Saturn V rocket—one of the most powerful rockets ever built.
You can also touch a real moon rock here, view original Apollo artifacts, and relive the iconic Apollo 11 moon landing in the ‘Lunar Theater’ with footage of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. Another highlight: the ‘Moon Tree Garden’ features trees that grew from seeds that once traveled into space on Apollo missions.
This modern theme park, set to open in 2025, is located right in the middle of NASA and SpaceX’s active launch pads. The centerpiece is the impressive ‘Gantry Tower,’ a four-story tower with observation decks and panoramic views of Cape Canaveral and the launch pads.
One of the absolute highlights is the Launch Viewing Area, where you can experience launches up close. There are also interactive experiences like ‘Build & Launch,’ where you design and test your own rocket, and various augmented reality experiences that bring historic missions and rockets to life. This themed area really gives you the feeling that you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at space travel.
At the Kennedy Space Center, you can also pay to enjoy a few extra experiences. One example is the ‘Astronaut Training Experience,’ where you’ll go through an extensive training program using virtual reality. Here, you’ll learn how to dock and complete special missions to see if you have what it takes to become a real astronaut!
You can also talk to a real astronaut during a personal meeting! Get your questions ready to ask during a Q&A session!
The Kennedy Space Center is still an active launch site. Rockets from NASA, SpaceX, and ULA regularly launch from Cape Canaveral, so you might just catch a real launch during your visit. Whether a launch actually takes place depends on the time of day, the weather, and the type of mission. You can find the current launch schedule and available viewing locations at the Official launch schedule page of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
For some launches, visitors can access special viewing areas within or near the Visitor Complex, but this varies by flight and is not always included with a standard ticket. The regular bus tour takes you past several historic sites at Cape Canaveral, where you can see launch pads from a distance that played a major role in past missions. Due to the rise of commercial spaceflight, launches are more frequent these days, but there’s never a guarantee.
