Episode destination: Tokyo

With more than 14 million residents in the city and nearly 40 million in the metropolitan region, it is one of the largest urban areas in the world. Willem and Rick explain that the city used to be called Edo and did not become the capital of Japan until the 19th century. They also discuss the time difference with the Netherlands and how Tokyo is known for its special combination of ancient traditions and ultramodern technology.

Tokyo neighborhoods & traditional culture

They take listeners through different neighborhoods of the city. For example, they discuss Ginza, where you will find luxury stores and large department stores, and Akihabara, the center of technology, games and Japanese pop culture such as anime and manga. According to Willem and Rick, this neighborhood almost feels like another world with huge electronics stores, arcades and themed cafes.

The traditional side of Tokyo is also featured. Asakusa is home to the famous Senso-ji temple, one of the city's oldest and most visited temples. The route to the temple is through a busy street full of souvenir stores and traditional snacks, which they say is a perfect place to experience Japanese culture and street food!

Modern Highlights of the City

Tokyo is home to several modern highlights such as the Tokyo Skytree, which offers impressive views of the city, and TeamLab Planets, an interactive art experience where visitors walk through rooms of light, water and digital projections. Also passing by is the Toyosu Fish Market, where the famous tuna auction takes place every morning.

In western Tokyo are the popular districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku. Shibuya is known for the famous Shibuya Crossing, one of the busiest intersections in the world, and the statue of the loyal dog Hachiko. Harajuku, on the other hand, is famous for its colorful fashion and street culture, while Shinjuku is known for its skyscrapers, restaurants and lively nightlife.

Tokyo Disney Resort

For amusement park enthusiasts, William and Rick also discuss Tokyo Disney Resort. The resort consists of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, with DisneySea in particular being among the best theme parks in the world, according to them.

✈️ Rick's Travel Tip

In this regular column, Rick shares his practical tips for visiting Tokyo. According to him, it is important to plan your trip well because the city is huge and consists of many different neighborhoods, each with its own atmosphere.

What is the best travel time and duration for Tokyo?

  • Late March to early June are ideal due to the temperatures
  • Stay in the city for at least 4 to 5 days To quietly explore different neighborhoods

Practical travel tips

  • Plan Tokyo by district - Tokyo is huge. Rick recommends planning your days by district (e.g., Shibuya, Shinjuku, Asakusa, Ginza) so you don't have to constantly travel through the city.
  • Make use of public transportation - The city's subway system is extensive and very efficient. It can seem complex at first, but a navigation app will get you there quickly.
  • Watch Golden Week - He warns of Golden Week (late April/early May). During this period, many Japanese travel by themselves, so attractions and hotels can be crowded.
  • Combine various experiences - Rick recommends experiencing Tokyo as a mix of modern and traditional: temples, neighborhoods, food, as well as modern attractions such as observation decks or interactive museums.

His conclusion: Tokyo is a huge city, but it is precisely by planning your trip neighborhood by neighborhood and taking enough time that it becomes one of the most impressive city trips you can take.

  • Japanese snacks from vending machines and stores - According to Willem, a fun way to discover new flavors

In addition, Willem and Rick also discuss snacks at Tokyo's Disney parks, where you can try all kinds of unique park snacks that you won't find anywhere else in the world.

Tokyo, according to them, stands for culinary:

  • Street food and quick snacks
  • Convenience store food of surprisingly good quality
  • Traditional Japanese dishes

Their conclusion: Tokyo is a food lover's dream, where you can discover new flavors all day long, from simple snacks to special local dishes.
